What is a doula and why should you have one?

What is a Doula?

A doula is a person that is there to help with emotional support and physical comfort for you and your birth partner through the birth and postpartum process. Many places have lost touch with the importance of nurturing and support while in the birth space. Often, people are lead to believe that their bodies aren't capable or powerful enough to give birth. There are many cultures that strongly focus on the importance of the health of the birthing person and the baby. In those cultures, the person giving birth is surrounded by their loved ones, who make sure their needs are met. As a doula, I want to create a space where you and your family feel well taken care of, comfortable, and confident in your ability to be a parent. That is done by providing you with the support, knowledge, and compassion you need so you are able to become a parent in the way you choose for yourself.

Why Should You Have a Doula

There are many benefits of having a doula. A doula can help decrease:

  1. unplanned Cesarian Section
  2. unplanned medical interventions
  3. length of childbirth
  4. risk of postpartum mental disorders
  5. sense of fear and inability to give birth

A doula can help increase:

  1. breastfeeding success rate
  2. positive feelings about your birth experience
  3. communication between you, your birth partner, and your provider
  4. your confidence in decision making during labor
  5. the release of oxytocin

One major role of a doula is helping the person in labor release oxytocin, the love hormone. A doula helps keep oxytocin flowing by using physical comfort measures and emotional support. This hormone is crucial for the process of labor and connecting with your newborn. Oxytocin helps with:

  1. natural progression of labor. When this hormone is released in labor, it causes the contractions within the uterus.
  2. triggering the nurturing feelings you have towards your baby, which can help you to stay motivated to continue during labor.
  3. feeling loved and supported by the people around you, which will help you feel more relaxed. When relaxed in labor, you will often see fewer interventions and quicker progression.
  4. connecting with your baby after labor. This hormone will give you a strong urge to protect your child.
  5. the "let down" reflex during milk production.
  6. decreased bleeding after placenta delivery
  7. postpartum uterine contractions that revert your uterus back to it's regular size

There are so many benefits of oxytocin. It is essential to create an environment where you feel relaxed and loved.
